When Mr. Friedrichs traveled to Japan with his Leica M6 to work on a black and white book project the Japan of 1998 was a very different place than the Japan of 2021. There were no smartphones. There wasn't really any internet. There was almost no English signage. From outside of Japan, international perspectives tended to focus on “Weird Japan” as opposed to the contemporary — and branded! — notion of “Cool Japan”. He took many pictures in Tokyo and around Japan. When he returned to London he developed all the Tri-X Films and produced some very unique Silver Gelatine Prints in his darkroom in Brixton. The publisher in Germany canceled the project and photos were never published. In 2018 Creative Director Lars Harmsen, professor of typography and book design, asked one of his students to undertake the task of scanning the contact sheets and negatives first and then designing a book out of the material.
